History of Dentures – 1600s to the 20^th Century

We start off our history of dentures by looking back to the 1600s when they were crafted to restore smiles. Early dentures were made from ivory, sourced from elephants and hippos, attached to a swaggered gold base with wire. As dental technology evolved, human teeth and porcelain were used to make dentures, however, many could not afford these types. Early porcelain dentures often chipped and dentures made from human teeth had questionable origins.

Thankfully, by 1851, a flexible rubber called vulcanite opened the market and made dentures available for all classes, and improvements in the strength and texture of porcelain made for a popular choice. It wasn’t until the 20th century that acrylic resin became the norm and marked a significant breakthrough in prosthetic dentistry. This new material laid the foundation for modern dentures, often referred to as premium dentures, due to the advancements it brought over early materials.

The 1970s

Over the centuries, the treatment for people needing teeth replacements steadily improved, greatly enhancing the quality of life for those without natural teeth.
